OCDAC Newsletter released for June 3, 2011

We have started a social enterprise experiment http://www.empireavenue.com/ocdeaf to see how people would respond to a for-profit version of Orange County Deaf Advocacy Center. Using a social media website Empire Avenue we are seeing how the public responds to our presence, our biography, our resources, and external communications. After 4 days the response is very positive and that Orange County Deaf Advocacy Center is worth investing in.

Our recent newsletter has some interesting articles.

Orange County Deaf Advocacy Center Newsletter - April 16, 2011

Greetings everyone,

The deaf community in general is struggling with labels. Labels have been an lingering issue for decades however with the advent of video blogging technology the issue is now producing explosive dialogue and is producing shocking effects on the social implications. Labels in the deaf community refers as to the famed "deaf enough" scale. If you're deaf, "How deaf are you?" or are you "Deaf or not deaf enough to be a deaf leader" and so on. The discussions have been reflecting on how the deaf community co-exists with diversity within and this refers greatly to communication modalities. The sign language minority traditionally has been highly resistant to accepting members that use oral or cued methods. It goes all the way to a deaf extremist leader pointing out that oral and cued methods are not part of diversity within the deaf community but parts of diversions that causes divisions within the deaf community. The debate of labels rages on and with the use of video blogging technology, the intensity of the debate becomes stronger as we notice.

Our pet expo booth has broken it's first day fundraising record yesterday as we've taken on a new strategy of informing parents of newborn babies of the communication options available. People liked what we were doing and they responded with donations. Given its a pets expo, a lot of deaf and disabled people came. The new strategy is associated with AB 2072 information and can be found at http://eyefirevlogs.com/eyefire2/?p=9451 and the page itself a recent recipient of a top blog award from the Licensed Practice Nurses organization.

Orange County Deaf Advocacy Center Newsletter - April 9, 2011

Greetings everyone,

This newsletter gets a little bigger beginning with this issue as we've doubled the amount of external newsworthy content.

This is a response to Marla Hatrak’s Report on Mendoza’s Town Hall Meeting on January 21, 2011 as seen on http://yestoasl.com/2011/04/report-on-mendoza/

The recent California Standardized Testing and Reporting (S.T.A.R.) Program test results show the California sign language based education system is broken and is a system that needs fixing.

California School for the Deaf-Fremont District
http://star.cde.ca.gov/star2010/ViewReport.asp?ps=true&lstTestYear=2010&lstTestType=C&lstCounty=01&lstDistrict=31617-000&lstSchool=0131763&lstGroup=2&lstSubGroup=128

California School for the Deaf-Riverside District
http://star.cde.ca.gov/star2010/ViewReport.asp?ps=true&lstTestYear=2010&lstTestType=C&lstCounty=33&lstDistrict=31625-000&lstSchool=3330834&lstGroup=2&lstSubGroup=128

And the current results are no better than when the California Education Department recognized the poor S.T.A.R. results in 2007.

http://www.cde.ca.gov/eo/in/se/agdeaf.asp

There is definitely a broken system in the California Education Department and it needs a major overhaul if parents are to become impressed with sign language as an option for their deaf newborns.

Orange County Deaf Advocacy Center Newsletter - April 4, 2011

Greetings everyone,

This newsletter covers some of the changes in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as last week's newsletter covered some ADA changes affecting the deaf and disability communities. Moreover, the new ADA regulations will include first-ever accessibility requirements for swimming pools, parks, golf courses, boating facilities, exercise clubs and other recreational facilities. Information and explanations in this newsletter is not legal advice. For legal advice, please contact an attorney.

There is a new housing project nearing completion in Fullerton, California that provides emergency shelters to men and their children who need to escape from domestic violence situations and/or escape from their abusive wives or partners. This is a dedicated apartment building. Nothing as big as this has ever been seen in the domestic violence industry. We see many domestic violence shelters proliferate throughout our society and almost all of these shelters discriminate against men and their children. This housing project is leading a role to bring fairness and equality to the concept of emergency sheltering from domestic violence situations.

A new social website for deaf video bloggers has opened. It's called Deafbook.tv and you can access it at www.deafbook.tv and its very inclusive. It's a little bit like facebook. I strongly suggest you visit that website. Search for my name there and send me a friend request.

ADA Definition of : Housing at a Place of Education

The Department has added a new definition to Sec. 36.104, "housing at a place of education," to clarify the types of educational housing programs that are covered by this title. This section defines "housing at a place of education" as "housing operated by or on behalf of an elementary, secondary, undergraduate, or postgraduate school, or other place of education, including dormitories, suites, apartments, or other places of residence." This definition does not apply to social service programs that combine residential housing with social services, such as a residential job training program.

Examples : This removes housing at social service establishments from the definition "Housing at a Place of Education".

Clarifying On The Two "Criminal Cases" On My Record

Yes I, Richard Roehm, admit I have two records in the criminal/traffic section of the court records. I'm clarifying them for you so someone else doesn't have to twist it out. These two records are the ONLY records. A handful of deafies have been saying something else that is not true at all.

=============================

First case : No Slam Dunk On Diaper Toss

I was driving and found that there was a smelly diaper in the back of my car. I wanted to toss it to the dumpster on the parking lot. I tossed it and it missed and hit a cop's car hiding behind the dumpster. Judge thought it was funny and dismissed it.

Second case : Driving Nobody's Car

Was caught driving a car without a license plate and no registration. $25 fine. That's it.
